HIKAM Opposes Nick Adams’ Appointment as US Ambassador to Malaysia
Himpunan Gerakan Islam Malaysia (HIKAM) strongly opposes the proposed appointment of Nick Adams as US Ambassador to Malaysia. His nomination is not only appalling, but also tarnishes the values of international diplomacy which should be founded on integrity, wisdom, and cultural sensitivity.
Adams possesses neither the personal nor moral qualities needed to represent such a major nation as the US in this country.
As a public figure who often puts forth extreme rhetoric, racist statements and denigrating commentary towards various communities, Adams does not reflect the values of tolerance and respect which underlie relations between Malaysia and the US.
Malaysia is a multi-racial and multi-religious country which harbours a society that places great emphasis on good manners, diplomacy, and civility in international relations. His nature and personal record fall grossly short of and in fact contradict the requirements for holding a diplomatic position here.
HIKAM is of the view that this appointment could generate tensions and undermine the good relations that have long existed between the two countries.
The presence of such a boisterous individual who carries a narrative of hatred and disrespect for universal values poses a great risk of disrupting the social stability and cultural understanding that have been fostered with immense effort by various parties over the years.
HIKAM calls on the Malaysian government to express a firm stance of opposition towards this appointment. As a sovereign nation, Malaysia reserves the right to accept or reject foreign envoys to this country.
Accordingly, HIKAM urges the government to seriously deliberate Adams’ background and the implications of his appointment, and in turn, we strongly encourage the US authorities to reconsider their nomination.
The position of ambassador is no platform for narrow political interests or populist rhetorical experiments. It mandates good moral standing, maturity of thinking, and respect for the culture of the host country, and it is painfully clear that Adams bears none of these qualities.
