WADAH PRESS STATEMENT, 11 MAY 2025 INDIA-PAKISTAN CEASEFIRE: A CALL FOR JUSTICE, DIALOGUE AND REGIONAL PEACE
Wadah Pencerdasan Umat Malaysia (WADAH) welcomes the announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following a worrying escalation of military tension, including missile and drone strikes along the Line of Control (LoC). Both nations must commit to this ceasefire based on universal humanitarian principles. The agreement, reached through international mediation, presents a vital opportunity to end violence and open the door to peaceful dialogue.
As a civil society organization that upholds the principles of peace, justice, and universal solidarity, WADAH states the following positions:
Solidarity with Innocent Victims WADAH conveys its deepest condolences to all victims of violence on both sides of the border, particularly civilians in Jammu and Kashmir who remain trapped in an endless cycle of conflict. The loss of innocent lives—whether Indian, Pakistani, or Kashmiri—must never be accepted or normalized.
Support for Dialogue and De-escalation WADAH urges both the Indian and Pakistani governments to uphold the ceasefire with full responsibility and to open space for inclusive peace dialogue involving the voice of the Kashmiri people as a key stakeholder. Political solutions through negotiations are the most sustainable way forward.
India-Pakistan, Culture of Peace
Upholding Human Rights in Kashmir WADAH expresses deep concern over the continued violations of human rights in Indian-administered Kashmir. We call on the international community, including the OIC and ASEAN, to take a stronger stance in pushing for demilitarization, the restoration of civil liberties, and the recognition of the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.
Malaysia’s Role as a Regional Peace Advocate WADAH supports any diplomatic initiative by the Government of Malaysia and other ASEAN member states in mediating peace between India and Pakistan. As a nation with a successful history of inter-ethnic conflict resolution since 1967, Malaysia has shown its ability to manage diversity. Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his capacity as ASEAN Chair, should be empowered to lead regional diplomatic efforts in upholding humanity, dignity, and regional stability.
A Call for Ummatic Consciousness The recurring violence in South Asia highlights the urgent need for a unified ummatic vision and solidarity among Islamic NGOs, scholars, and civil society networks.
Across geographical boundaries, our collective mission is to uphold global justice and peace, in line with the Qur’anic guidance: “Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression…” (Surah An-Nahl: 90)
WADAH remains steadfast in promoting a culture of peace (Fiqh Ta’ayush), rejecting all forms of extremism and aggression, and championing the rights and dignity of oppressed communities worldwide – including in Kashmir and Palestine.
