WADAH PENCERDASAN UMAT

OIC Independent Permanent Human Right’s Commission’s (IPHRC)

Statement during the Interactive Dialogue with Special Rapporteur

on Minorities

52nd Session of HRC, 23 March 2023

Mr. President,

IPHRC welcomes the report of the Special Rapporteur on Minorities and shares his concerns that the world is falling short when it comes to protection of minority rights.

Mr. President,

Hate speech, xenophobic rhetoric and incitement to violence against minorities are growing around the world. In Europe and elsewhere, right wing populist and xenophobic propaganda are affecting the human rights of the Muslim minorities.

Mr. President,

IPHRC is concerned about the global rise in religious violence and the absence of an appropriate response by the UN to reverse this worrying trend. A case in point is the denial of citizenship rights to the Rohingya minority. Protection of rights of Uyghur Muslims minority in Xinjiang should also be ensured. Furthermore, the more recent situation of Muslim minority being at risk of becoming stateless in India is deeply concerning, where the Indian State is expending its systematic discrimination against Muslims.

Mr. President,

Islamophobia remains the biggest contemporary challenge to ensuring these rights. The international recognition y the UN General Assembly of 15 March as the international day to combat Islamophobia is a positive step in the right direction. However, much more is needed to be done. On its part, IPHRC stands ready to cooperate with the Special Rapporteur and other UN mechanisms on Minorities.

I thank you, Mr. President.
